| PRESS KIT California Cling Peach Varieties: The Science Behind the Harvest The California Cling Peach harvest commences in the early weeks of June and runs through the first few days of September. Throughout this time, Cling Peach growers are busy harvesting their orchards and delivering the crop to the processing plants, which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Cling Peach industry is continually making strides in developing new peach varieties by working with private Cling Peach breeders, the California Canning Peach Association (CCPA) and California universities and agricultural research institutions. As of 2001, the industry utilizes about two dozen varieties of Cling Peaches (more than 80 are in existence). Each variety ripens at a different time throughout the harvest, allowing the processing plants to operate on a manageably-paced schedule throughout the summer months. Here are a few of the most popular Cling Peach varieties (listed here in order of ripening dates) include: Loadel; Stanislaus; Carson; Bowen; Andross; Klamt; Ross; Rizzi; Davis; Carolyn; Monaco; Halford; Wiser; Starn; Hesse; Sullivan #4; Corona. (Please see chart of harvesting dates.) |
