As parents and teachers, you know more than anyone
about your children's eating habits. You also know how difficult it is to
sneak balanced nutrition into their meals. The California Cling Peach Board
would like to help.
Children begin developing lifetime eating habits in their first years. By
age five, they are aware of the relationship between their bodies and the
foods they eat. By age eight, kids can assess their own diets by comparing
them to the Food Guide Pyramid. As parents and teachers, you can encourage
this awareness by relaying simple, direct nutrition lessons throughout the
day. In doing so, you will provide kids information that will empower them
to make healthy eating choices on their own. Here are some ideas:
- By explaining that fruits and vegetables
supply powerful vitamins, that grains provide energy and that
meat, eggs and milk help build strong bones and muscles, you can
teach kids the importance of building well-balanced diets. For
example, California Cling Peaches provide vitamin A, Vitamin C
and fiber. For more detailed nutritional information about California
Cling Peaches, visit our Nutrition
and Health section.
- By serving a variety of foods, especially
fruits and vegetables, you can teach kids that different foods
help their bodies in different ways and you can encourage them
to be open to new foods.
- Providing children nutritious, convenient
snacks will teach them that healthy snacking will keep their bodies
running smoothly throughout the day.
- Welcome kids into the kitchen. Ask
them to plan a nutritious, well-balanced dinner menu and then
work together to prepare the meal. This activity will encourage
kids to take an active role in nutrition and help them feel in
control of their bodies.
- Show kids that nutrition lessons can
be fun. Visit the California Cling Peach Board's Peach
Playground for coloring pages, games, kid-approved recipes
and California Cling Peach Information.
