March is here, and along with it come hints of spring and National Nutrition Month® (NNM). The California Cling Peach Board (CCPB) is dedicating this issue of The Peach Press to NNM in celebration of your commitment to students’ health. We know that ultimately your work helps teach healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime.
In this issue you’ll find an informative profile on CCPB Nutrition Advisory Panel member, Marion MacArthur from Mt. Diablo Unified School District , as well as a recipe for an easy and crowd-pleasing smoothie, sure to delight students in your district. You’ll also enjoy reading our Director-to-Director column in which Diane Wegner Deshler explains the exciting new materials the CCPB has been working on developing.
The CCPB’s new School Nutrition Advisory Panel is celebrating, too, by expanding its Director-to-Director Program to district innovators far beyond California . I’d like to personally welcome both Meghan Gibbons, RD, LDN of Evanston Township in Evanston , IL ; and Diane Coleman of Madison Local Schools in Mansfield , OH . Each month we add new directors to our program and provide their districts with valuable resources. If you’d like to join, please feel free to contact the Board’s own Director of Schools and Commodities, Diane Wegner Deshler, directly at dianewd@echopr.com for details or log onto our site at www.calclingpeach.com and visit our school foodservice section. Additionally, we regularly profile our members so that we can share your innovations with fellow industry friends. Join and you too could be spotlighted in our Peach Press!
With USDA surveys underway, I’d like to remind everyone that there are plenty of delicious California Peaches available for your entitlement dollars. Picked at the peak of ripeness and packed within 24-48 hours, canned peaches boast the nutritionals and convenience to fit your programs and the taste that kids love. So whether you’re reinvigorating your salad bar offerings (see our suggestions in upcoming article), looking to create a “California Fruit Cocktail” (peaches, apricots, diced pears and frozen strawberries), or add a fruit to a breakfast program, please keep kids’ favorite—peaches—in mind!
As always, I would like to thank you for your continued interest in California Cling Peaches as well as your ongoing commitment to maintaining the health of students. Please take a moment to read the Director-to-Director column as well, as we have been developing more exciting materials for you and your schools.
Thanks again,
Sarb Johl, Chairman
